Why we all need a morning yoga routine

There is no denying that amazing feeling of a full body stretch when you wake up from a good night’s sleep. When you are still nestled under the blankets and you stretch from your fingertips to your toes, tightening your muscles and feeling the life in you stir and waken…. I live for that moment in bed, before I realize it means that I must eventually get up!

I take this concept of stretching, lengthening and waking up out of bed, all the way to the floor! Yes, it might be a little colder, and often times does not start off feeling that great, (I know I am not selling you yet) but give yourself ten minutes to experience pure body bliss before your day starts. If you don’t think that you will feel pure bliss, at least give yourself the chance to get your blood moving enough that you can bend down to tie your shoes without feeling like you will crack in half!

That feeling of cracking in half is what made me start this routine. After having hip surgery from a snowboarding injury my body just wasn’t bending and bouncing out of bed like I once did. Every morning I would wake up, even 8 months after the surgery, and I literally felt like I was going to crack in half!

Even my bones felt tight… this forced me to the floor…. Forced me to take my yoga practice from being designated to a class that I attended a few times a week to every morning.

I just started with sun salutations. A simple sequence that I repeated 5-10 times depending on how my body felt, or how much time I had. Then I started to add to this, cutting down my sun salutations and adding a warrior series, as well as a few simple twists and heart openers. Nothing crazy, something I could easily remember and repeat every morning in around 10 minutes.

Rather than a fragile person ready to break, when I got off my mat, I felt like I could walk. From there I would be able to warm up and get going, either riding, traveling, cross training… whatever the day had in store for me. I believe that no matter what it is that you are tackling, the body needs a minute of movement in the morning! It helps the blood flow, wakes up your digestive system, and even your brain. If you think that you don’t have time to fit it in, or just can’t stop from hitting that snooze button to make time for it, keep your closet doors open. Simultaneously scan your clothes to pick out your outfit in your mind while stretching…. Multi-tasking at its finest!

Hope that you give it a try! Comment and let me know what you think!
